End Polio now

Rotary International is committed to the worldwide eradication of polio. While we're nearly there - there are currently 3 countries left with existing polio cases - we continue to raise funds for and awareness of this terrible disease.

Typically we do most of our polio work in February, which includes an open house day and a local pub quiz but other activities come up throughout the year such as purple crocus planting in November! Look out for 5000 purple crocuses in bloom near the Alameda Walk and think polio.

Every penny we raise for the polio campaign is tripled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

We were recently presented with an award for raising over $18,000USD for the End Polio Now campaign over 3 years but we still want to raise more.

The Firs lower school

Supporting the Firs Lower School in Ampthill is an important cause close to home because many in #AmpthillFlexi have or had child who go/went there.

They had a temporary classroom that was no longer fit for purpose. To improve the learning environment, we supported the school's fundraising efforts to build two new classrooms and convert the existing temporary block into a library and break-out spaces for small group interventions.

Scout Hut

The Scout Hut in Ampthill, which serves 160 youngsters involved in Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Guides each week has passed its useful life.

In desperate need of renovation (particularly the roof) and amplification, #AmpthillFlexi is raising funds through our annual garden party and our annual music night at the Dew Drop.

We support many other initiatives including:

  • Mum vs Cancer - a local mum and her son have both been diagnosed with cancer and need ongoing treatment.
  • CHUMS - mental health charity for children
  • Keech Hospice - specialist care for adults and children facing terminal and life-limiting illnesses in Luton, Beds, Herts and Milton Keynes
  • Buddy Benches - we installed a pair of benches in local schools to aid friend-finding for children who feel lonely in the playground.

As a small team, #AmpthillFlexi members frequently get to choose which causes we want to support. If you'd like to join us and have an impact on communities near and far, click the button below.
